We have finally rounded the corner to spring. And after a little post-holiday lull, things in the work-at-home world are looking up! This is the time of year we see many remote jobs hiring to cover the upcoming travel and moving season. We start seeing some open jobs in a few other popular industries as well.

Spring is a great time to look for open jobs. Each season typically brings something different when it comes to remote work. Here are a few remote work options you may find on your favorite job board right now:
U-Haul – U-Haul offers a variety of products from moving trucks to storage to roadside assistance. The summer is a busy time of year for them. As such, we typically see an increase in hiring remote employees around this time of year.
Hilton – Travel is once again on the rise and many companies in this industry are again hiring remote workers to take reservations and field customer service calls. Hilton is one of them.
Measurement – Test scoring is a seasonal position but one highly sought after by members of this community. In many cases, no experience is necessary but you will need a bachelor’s degree. In addition to Measurement, BCforward, Pearson and others hire for this remote position.
Elevate K-12 – If you have a teaching degree, you may have no trouble finding job openings for online teachers. This particular company is currently hiring Computer Science, Science, ASL, Math, German teachers and more. There are so many other companies in this industry as well. If Elevate K-12 doesn’t have the opportunity for you, look into some of the others.
eBay – It’s no surprise that eCommerce has been on the rise over the past year. And not necessarily just an increase in buyers but sellers as well. We have recently seen eBay hiring remote employees for their customer service roles. Their most recent position offered full-time hours and benefits.
BuzzFeed – We are seeing a lot of news and content websites contracting freelance writers this season. In the case of the BuzzFeed family of websites, they are seeking freelance writers for a three-month contract. As their sites cover trending news topics, this one requires a set schedule but many writing roles do not. Bustle and Dotdash are two other big companies to check into for freelance writing roles.
Landi English – Many online education companies are seeking remote tutors. Landi English offers English as a Second Language, or ESL, classes. Some companies in this industry do not require a teaching certificate, others do. In almost all cases, you will need a bachelor’s degree in any subject and have the ability to obtain TESOL or TEFL certification.
This is just a small sampling of what’s out there. And new remote job postings go up on popular job boards like Indeed and FlexJobs every day.
What kind of setup do you need in order to work remotely?
The type of home office setup you will need for a remote job will greatly depend on the job. With a freelance writing job, for example, you may only need a laptop and a wireless Internet connection to complete your remote work. With a work-at-home customer service position on the other hand, you may be required to have a newer desktop PC, a landline phone and a headset. And even phone-based home job requirements can vary from position to position and company to company.
In order to know what equipment requirements you will need, read the job description fully and carefully. If anything out of the usual will be necessary, it’s usually stated upfront before you even apply.

The type of jobs available to remote workers continues to grow every year. This was especially the case over the course of 2020 as remote work trends changed dramatically and quickly. There are more industries online than ever before. Whether your background or interest lie in accounting, healthcare, customer or client service, IT, writing or beyond, there is likely something out there for you.

What should you look for in a remote position?
A remote job search can be exciting, especially if you are new to the work-at-home world. But, you will want to do your research. You will want to weigh the pros and cons of a position. You will want to make sure you are able to actually complete the job you are applying for satisfactorily or it may be a poor experience for everyone involved.
A few things you should look for:
- Is this position for a remote employee or independent contractor? You will need to know this for tax purposes.
- Is this flexible work, or will your schedule be dictated by the company?
- Will any training be paid or unpaid?
- Will you be paid by the hour, time active only, by the project or some other metric entirely?
Many times this information can be found in the job listings themselves, other times you may need to visit the company’s website looking for their remote work policy or ask these questions during the interview process.
You will also want to maintain some level of skepticism about any remote job you come across. There are a lot of scammers out there preying on people who are desperate for work-from-home jobs. They will even pose as well-known companies to try to get you to hand over your personal information.
A few things to keep in mind:
- If it smells too good to be true, it probably is.
- With the exception of the occasional background check, you shouldn’t have to send a company a bunch of money in order to get a job. (A business opportunity, maybe. But not a j-o-b.)
- Legit online jobs don’t conduct interviews by Facebook Messenger or other messaging services. And they don’t pressure you over Messenger to hand over passwords, bank information or purchase gift cards.
- They also don’t send you money orders to purchase equipment and ask you to send them the overage back. That’s a classic check-cashing scheme. And you’ll be on the hook!
It can take a while to get hired in a legit remote job, but don’t give up
Please be aware that finding your first remote job is likely going to take some time. It can be hard not to try to rush things, but it’s better to be safe than sorry. Always do your research. If you aren’t sure whether an offer is coming from a legit company or a poser, contact the company directly and ask. (This is especially important if you don’t remember applying for a position in the first place!)
Keep at it and eventually you’ll find a great fit for you! Remote jobs hiring are simply the best since you can work from the comfort of your own home.
